“If I could only ever give you one thing it would be…
If you could only choose one thing you should choose…
The very best of all things is…
With God you have all things. Without God you have nothing.”
After days of prayer and fasting, I stood in front of several thousand eager college students, and those were the words that came out. I had planned on saying something else, something funny and entertaining. But all I could talk about was God.
“You need God.
Revival is God.
It’s all about God.”
God made an appearance on campus. We spent the next couple of days swimming in the magnificent glory of the manifest presence of God. All night prayer meetings broke out, students swarmed the altars, lives were turned right side up, young people were called to ministry, young men and woman confessed Christ as savior, and discouraged leaders were refreshed…all because of the manifest presence of God.
Those involved had some unspeakably wonderful, personal God moments. Many I can’t share, but an example of such a moment occurred one night as I was speaking. It was as though I could see the glory of God, like thousands of brilliant, sparkling, golden lights, falling as snowflakes gently down on the students. (I get tears and shivers as I write this.) The holy hush on the audience was only broken as students began to weep. It was so sweet, so precious–to feel God in the room loving His children…and He loves you. He wants you to deeply experience Him. You can. You absolutely must.
The experience I described happened a dozen years ago. Since then I have been hungry for more.
One reason we are starting a church in one of the least-reached parts of one of the least-reached cities in America is because we want to place ourselves in a situation where we would be desperate for God. Without God, we will fail. If God is not the main attraction of our church, we will fail.
Like Moses, we are crying out to God,
“If you don’t personally go with us, don’t make us leave this place. How will anyone know that you look favorably on me—on me and on your people—if you don’t go with us? For your presence among us sets your people and me apart from all other people on the earth.” (Exodus 33:15-16)
